Does the international community need to redouble its efforts to regulate the research and development of nano-enabled products? Ioana Puscas thinks so. While nanotechnology is regarded as a ‘silver bullet’ for a host of security challenges, there’s growing concern over what might happen if it falls into the wrong hands.

From electronics and information technology to healthcare and beyond, nanotechnology and nano-enabled products are becoming an increasingly important feature of our everyday lives. According to an inventory prepared by The Project of Emerging Nanotechnologies, there was well over 1600 nanotechnology based-products on the market as of October 2013. It’s also been suggested that the overall value of the global nanotechnology market will exceed $1 trillion (CHF925 billion) at some point in 2015. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the United States’ defense agencies continue to look at the strategic possibilities offered by nano-enabled platforms.
